Start with the age and condition of the roof
If your roof has roughly a decade or more of life left and no active problems, solar can go straight on. If it is nearing the end of its life, showing granule loss, curling shingles, soft decking or past leaks, reroof first.
What happens if you install first and reroof later
The array has to come off and go back on. That means labor to remove and store the panels, labor to reinstall them, new flashing and resealing, and system downtime. It is a normal job, but it is a cost you can avoid by sequencing correctly.
